Complications & Deaths Linked to Homeopathic Teething Tablets

Homeopathic teething tablets are marketed to treat teething pain in infants and children. Some products in this category include:

  • Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablet
  • CVS Homeopathic Infants’ Teething Tablet (Raritan)
  • Kids Relief Homeopathic Ear Relief Oral Liquid (Raritan)
  • CVS Homeopathic Kids’ Ear Relief Liquid (Raritan)

A warning issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2016 advised consumers to stay away from homeopathic remedies when treating teething pain in children. The warning came after an agency review implicated these products in 10 infant deaths and hundreds of adverse events, including seizures.  The FDA noted that homeopathic teething tablets and gels have not been evaluated or approved by the agency for safety or efficacy. The supposed health benefits associated with these types of products have not been proven.

Many of the adverse events described by the FDA were consistent with belladonna poisoning. In small amounts, belladonna will produce a sedative effect. But large amounts can be toxic, and even deadly. Symptoms of belladonna poisoning include:

  • Dilated pupils
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision
  • Tachycardia
  • Loss of balance
  • Staggering
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Flushing
  • Severely dry mouth and throat
  • Slurred speech
  • Urinary retention
  • Constipation
  • Confusion

Since 2010, two teething tablets recalls have been issued for homeopathic products that potentially contained inconsistent levels of belladonna. In October 2010, Hyland’s recalled its teething tablets, following reports of complications characteristic of belladonna poisoning. Raritan Pharmaceuticals announced a precautionary recall of its homeopathic teething products in November 2016, after testing suggested varying belladonna levels. However, no adverse events were reported in relation to its products.
